JAIL! for Drunk Motorcyclists
As it currently stands, the punishment for driving a car under the influence (DUI) for the first time warrants a punishment of a possible 10,000 baht fine up to 6 months jail time and community service, with repeated offenders being fined 20,000 baht. And in the case of manslaughter, a possible 10 years in prison. For motorcyclists the fines only extend to 3,000 to 5,000 baht and community service, with no jail time.
What's the Problem?
Driving under the influence, whether a car or motorcycle, puts the driver and people around at risk. Motorcycle accidents are a notorious cause of death in Thailand, killing both the person hit and the person driving. To urge such incidents from happening, harsher punishments need to be given to drunk driving incidents caused by motorcyclists.
What can you do to help?
Act now by signing the petition and urging the Thai government to put in place the same punishments, matching that of driving a car with a DUI, to all drunk driving cases regardless of vehicle.
